Why STEM?

Think about the inventions and products which have made over lives easier over the years. Look at how our lives have changed and lengthened. How we are closer together with people from all over the world, how we have made the earth smaller, more accessible and more collaborative.
Think back! What are the most wide reaching changes Humans have overseen? Fire? Agriculture? Metal working? The Printing Press? Antibiotics? Electricity?
All of these discoveries, inventions, whatever you want to call them came from people wondering why and going and trying to figure something out. I believe that everyone is born to do that! Watch your child and tell me they are not doing that ALL THE TIME! Tell me they are not driven by wonder! I wonder what....? What if....?
We need our education to get back to that. We may need advancement and invention and thought and design more now that ever1 And who's gonna do it? We need to have our kids think big, aim high, and design, experiment, build, fail, critique, work together to advance us onwards again.
The world has huge issues with a growing population and limited resources, with too much hubris and not enough wonder.
That's how big this is, and a well funded and executed STEM program is where it starts!

Framing our Reading – Vocab Mod 6 Liam Breathnach The three words I chose were endocrinologist, genome and variant. They were all included in an article on how genetics influences height.   The article linked here, https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/02/170201131513.htm details how genes are linked to height and how we may learn from, and influence this in future. There are many reasons I chose the word endocrinologist. Its length goes against it initially but it is a great example to show how we can break up words in to sections to get to the meaning. Teaching the word we can expand biological vocabulary and talk about prefixes such as hemo_, and group words like pulmonary, renal, cardiac which pertain to body parts. There is also an opportunity to teach about the various specialized medical professionals you may encounter such as oncologists. The lesson could even stretch to scientists in other fields, such as ecologist or botanists.     ...
